NYS GOP CONVENTION
I had the privilege this past week to attend as a guest, the New York Republican State Convention held at Hofstra University in Hempstead, L. I.
The purpose of the convention was to designate candidates to run for:
GOVERNOR
LT. GOVERNOR
ATTORNEY GENERAL
COMPTROLLER
US SEANTE
The convention lasted two days from May 31-June 1st.
On day one the state commiteemen present selected Jeanne Pirro, the fomer Westchester County District Attorney as our Attorney General candidate. Jeanne was chosen without any opposition and will not face a primary.
However, that was not the case for US Senate. Former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer faced off against former Reagan administration official K. T. McFarland of NYC. In the end Spencer received the official designation with over 60 percent of the vote. However, McFarland won more than 25 percent of the vote. According to the rules of the convention if a candidate receives more than 25 percent of the vote the race goes to primary in September. Watch for a nasty primary race between Spencer and McFarland.
That evening there were hospitality suites and cocktail parties at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City. I attended briefly the suite for Jeanne Pirro, and John Spencer and also attended the cocktail reception for Governor candidate John Faso.
The following day was the big contest, that of Governor. Former Assembly Republican Leader John Faso of Columbia County faced off with Former Massachusetts Governor William Weld of Suffolk County. Orange County GOP Chairman William DeProspo nominated William Weld, something that apparently had little effect on the Orange County delegation which voted 5 to 3 for John Faso. Two of those Weld votes were proxies carried by DeProspo. It has been widely rumored that DeProspo is with the Weld camp in an attempt to be Weld's choice for State GOP Chairman. I think Mr. DeProspo should be focusing on our parties problems here at home such as our hair thin majority on the County Legislature and the increasing amount of towns that are going over to the Democrats, as well as the ever decreasing GOP enrollment numbers. I believe the chair needs to fix those problems here before he can fix the State GOP's problems.
In the end Faso won, with over 60 percent of the vote. This was big, as Weld looked like he had the nomination locked up just a couple of months ago. Weld did however garner more then 25 percent of the vote. So, there will be a primary for this race. I am supporting John Faso and I encourage everyone to as well.
On the Lt. Governor front, Mr. Faso's choice was selected. C. Scott Vanderhof, the County Executive of Rockland County received the official designation. However, Mr. Weld's choice, NYS Secretary of State Christopher Jacobs received 25 percent of the vote. So there will be a primary for this race as well. Unlike in the General Election the Governor and Lt. Governor candidates run separate in the primary. So, there is a possibility Weld could end up running with Faso's running mate and vice versa.
I was very impressed with our Comptroller candidate. J. Christopher Callaghan of Saratoga County. Chris gave a very spirited speech and seemed to know what he was talking about. He was very likeable and I think he could be a contender in November. Chris is the elected County Treasurer of Saratoga County. He was elected at convention without opposition.
In the end I was very happy to attend the convention. It was quite interesting and I am very happy with our GOP ticket.
